Fraser Stewart at Kunsteyssen Alkmaar

Voor Kunsteyssen maakt beeldend kunstenaar Fraser Stewart meerdere kunstwerken. De nieuwe films die hij bij Kunsteyssen vertoont, hebben raadselachtige titels zoals, 'Once upon a time' en 'I want to be your hero' Beide films hebben een humoristische ondertoon. Fraser Stewart vraagt zich regelmatig af bij het werk dat hij maakt of de ellende van anderen, toeschouwers ook een lach zou kunnen ontlokken. Naast de films maakt Fraser Stewart ook de installatie Time Waits For No Man

Stewart roept met deze installatie een sfeer op die doet denken aan de kindertijd, waarbij kinderen eindeloos op een schommel in de speeltuin schommelen. De films en voorstellingen van Fraser Stewart gaan vaak over de onvermijdelijkheid van het bestaan. Vooral alledaagse rituelen hebben zijn interesse.

BK2B the 2nd year of fine arts from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy will have a group exhibition at our temporary gallery space currently located at Admiraal de Ruijterweg in Amsterdam.

BK2B is a project devised to investigate and develop an artistic practice for a group. The title of the exhibition is derived from the name of the students class that identifies them as a group.

The working method for this group project was based on the children’s game "Chinese Whispers". This is usually played by a group sat in a circle and starts when one person whispers a short phrase to their neighbor. That neighbor then whispers what they thought they heard to the next one, and so on, until it reaches the person who started, who then announces to the group what the original phrase was. The last person then reveals what the phrase has transformed into through the chain of misunderstandings.

For this project the first participant wrote down a "whisper" and passed it on to the next who used this material as a point of departure to create a work for this exhibition. That participant then wrote down their idea as a reaction to the phrase they were given and the work it produced, and passed it on to the next artist.
And so on.
BK2B applied this method to their artistic process since it serves the intention central to their basic concept - which was to create a group process in which the works were linked and the artists influenced each other.

The works from this process will be on view for the first time at this exhibition, inviting the audience to investigate the workings of this chain reaction and its underlying relations.

De Service Garage visited Sweden with a very appreciated display during the Supermarket Art Fair in Stockholm. During the week in Sweden the Garage has enjoyed fruitful meetings and established great new contacts with artists, projects and other artist initiatives from all over the world, opening up for new collaborations, projects and exchanges.

Not only did the Service garage end up on the front page of the 'Svenska Dagbladet's' culture sector (one of the biggest daily news papers in Sweden) but also on the Swedish national TV.

"The goal of SUPERMARKET, the international artist-run art fair, is to provide a showcase for artist initiatives from all over the world and to create opportunities for new networks in the Swedish as well as the international art scene. 60 participants from 24 countries".

Update WORKSHOP SCREENPRINTING

The workshop started with a Portrait Photography session by Nico Schaerer.
Each Portait was printed on a overhead sheet and 3 sheets of paper.
The papersheets we used to cut out the fill-in and background colors (3 color stencil)
and the overhead sheet we used for screenprinting the top layer (Rasterised Portrait).
In my part of the Workshop I explained the similairities between
stencilling and screenprinting.

Donderdag 9 april a.s. verschijnen advertenties in de nationale en internationale pers voor de werving van kandidaten voor de functie van algemeen artistiek directeur van het Stedelijk Museum.

De Raad van Toezicht van het Stedelijk Museum nodigt potentiële kandidaten uit vóór 30 april a.s. te reflecteren. Ook wil de Raad graag geattendeerd worden op kandidaten. De selectiecommissie, onder voorzitterschap van de nieuwe voorzitter van de Raad van Toezicht, Mr. Alexander Ribbink, betrekt een aantal adviseurs uit de museumwereld bij de scouting en beoordeling van kandidaten.

De nieuwe directeur is de opvolger van de huidige directeur Gijs van Tuyl, wiens arbeidscontract per 31-12-2009 afloopt.

INSTALLATIE VAN ZORO FEIGL VERKOCHT

Het Zuiderzeemuseum heeft de driedelige kinetische installatie (300 m2) van Zoro Feigl (1983), die onderdeel vormt van de W139 tentoonstelling De Branding, gekocht. De installatie wordt daarmee onderdeel van de Rijkscollectie beeldende kunst.

De Branding heeft drie onderdelen: Ripple bestaat uit twaalf scheepstouwen van twintig meter lang die met pneumatische armen een choreografie van golven opvoeren. Lightship is gemaakt van twee 18e eewse houten sloepen die buik aan buik als een soort noot aan het plafond hangen. Daartussen zijn twee krachtige lampen gemonteerd. Het geheel draait langzaam rond en verlicht de verder verduisterde ruimte als een vuurtoren. Drifters tenslotte is een pallet waarop twintig antieke kompassen staan. De rozetten tollen rond doordat er een krachtige magneet, verbonden aan een electromotor tussen de kompassen ronddraait.

Interessant detail is dat de schepen en kompassen waarmee Feigl zijn installatie gemaakt heeft uit de collectie van het Zuiderzeemuseum komen. Erik Schilp, directeur van het Zuiderzeemuseum, benadrukt dat door de ingreep van Feigl de stukken, die eerst een doods bestaan in het depot leidden, een nieuwe betekenis en een nieuw leven krijgen. Lightship en Drifters zijn vanaf 4 juni onderdeel van de jubileummanifestatie van het Zuiderzeemuseum.
De Belgische Verbeke Foundation krijgt Ripple deze zomer in bruikleen voor een tentoonstelling over kunst en beweging.

Zoro Feigl werd direct na zijn eindexamen door W139 directeur Gijs Frieling aangesteld als Concious Dreamer. Als opdrachtformulering aan Feigl maakte Frieling een schilderij voor hem. Feigl maakte een aantal werken om de zichtbaarheid van W139 te versterken. De Branding is de laatste en grootste episode van Feigl’s Concious Dreamerschap.

Schilderij Frank Ammerlaan vernield

Een onbekende heeft woensdag op kunstbeurs Kunstvlaai in de Westergasfabriek een schilderij van kunstenaar Frank Ammerlaan vernield. De vandaal zette zijn hand in de dikke verflaag van het schilderij. Het is volgens Ammerlaan geruïneerd. Het schilderij was vlak voor de beurs verkocht. De schade voor de nieuwe eigenaar loopt volgens Ammerlaan in de honderden euro's. Ammerlaan won de Rietveldacademieprijs 2007 voor zijn eindexamenexpositie. Hij werkt veel met tekst en behandelt vaak 'maatschappelijk explosieve thema's'.
